1. Lenard and Tomulescu Family history
My father is a Hungarian, from the region of Turda in Romania and my mother (Tomulescu) a Romanian, from the region of Bacau.
- My grandfather from Turda was a small business owner and entrepreneur, until the communists seized all his assets and businesses. He then had to work as a glassblower in the factory for many decades until he eventually succeeded to get back an orchard in post-communist Romania, but he sold it as he was too old to take care of it.
- My grandfather from Bacau was a constructor and he worked in supervising the construction of some bridges and roads in Moldova which still stand today. I still remember his diligence and care for detail.
- Both my grandmothers have worked mainly as housewives and I remember them for being devoted to my well being, and other things which don’t fit into occupational cliches.
- Both my parents are studied chemical engineers. However my father has worked as a journalist while he was a student, but he had to give up his job due to intense pressure from the communist regime. For an important part of their life, both my parents worked at the Romacril Chemical Plant in Rasnov as office persons. After 1994 my father was hired by Henkel to build up the Industrial Adhesives business in Romania. He did this assisted by my mother for more than a decade.
As a child and a teenager I have lived in Rasnov. I have had the great chance of having the Welther Family as day carers until I was three. They have set the ground for my German education, which has extended into German primary school and secondary school.
I followed the courses of the Computer Science High School Grigore Moisil in Brasov. Here I met some outstanding teachers, as well as great colleagues. The culture of the school was at that time “extremely liberal”, which permitted me to do anything I desired. This had a positive effect for me, as I learned to have an initiative and act on it.
After high school I started psychology at Babes Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca. I very much loved it and became fascinated by statistics and neuroscience. After one year I moved to Bucharest, to start communication and propaganda* at the National School for Political Science and Administration. I particularly liked argumentative theory, semiotics and culture studies here. I also continued my studies in Cluj. While psychology had a very strong empirical-scientific approach, communication had a very strong speculative- relativistic approach. I believe both have helped me make sense out of different things. I graduated both programs.
During my student life in Bucharest I have been a volunteer at the Foundation for an Ethical Society (SynergEtica) and I have had some project based jobs in the field of communication and also human resources assessment. In my last year in Bucharest I have worked as an employee of Conscendo Marketing, in a great team from which I learned a lot – not just about marketing but also about people.
You can read more about my current projects, but here is a summary: I am in Maastricht now, where I study towards a bachelor degree in European Law. I am also developing the Webdesign Service Webfoo together with two partners and friends. I am also a volunteer for the League of Romanian Students Abroad.
My expectations for the next three years are to further move into a position from which I can bring positive change to Romanian society and to further develop my entrepreneurial/ managerial skills as well as to gain expertise in the field of law.
Note: My name is Denes Lenard, or actually Dénes István Lénárd. However, sometimes people misspell my name and write Dennis Lenard, Dennis Leonard, Dennis Lennard, Denis Lenard, Denis Leonard, Denis Lennard and so on.
* The actual name of the program is Communication and Public Relations, but I prefer the other one.
